Many in the industry call themselves challengers, making it harder to discern between a catchphrase and true differentiation. For us, the proof is in the choices we make, where we refuse to follow a convention that does not serve people, and where we challenge the longstanding assumptions of the industry.
This page is built for the people who explain Employee Benefits for a living. It contains information about what we have changed, what we have built, what the industry makes of it, along with the documents that help you take it to a client. New material lands here first, so it is worth a bookmark.
No other provider in this market offers a standalone benefit that pays on the permanent loss of a defined sense or physical ability. Group risk has asked the same questions for decades. This offering takes a completely different approach.
Traditional group risk cover asks whether someone can still work. But many people can, even after permanently losing an essential physical ability, leaving them outside the technical definition of disability and without a payout.
In this FAnews interview, Fedgroup Life CEO Walter van der Merwe explains Inability Cover, a South African employee benefits industry first that covers defined permanent losses, such as sight, hearing, walking or the use of a hand, regardless of whether a conventional disability claim would pay.
A standalone group risk benefit that pays a lump sum when an employee permanently and irreversibly loses a defined sense or physical ability through illness, injury, or disease. It is not linked to whether the person can still perform an occupation.
There is no individual medical underwriting for eligible employees and cover starts on day one. It can be taken on its own or alongside other group risk benefits, which makes it a realistic second step for a scheme that currently holds funeral cover and nothing else.
It was built for workforces exposed to physical risk, in mining, manufacturing, engineering, construction, security and agriculture, and for the smaller and mid-sized employers who carry the responsibility of protecting them.

Employers rarely buy one benefit. The useful question to ask in the meeting is what each each type of cover brings to the table and whether it meets the needs of the employer - and their employees - because they each cover something very specific on the risk spectrum. Inability Cover doesn't replace existing cover, it complements it by slotting neatly in between disability and critical illness cover.
Cover for an employee who can no longer perform an occupation, their own or another for which their training and experience suit them.
Inability Cover assessment is a standardised functional test carried out by a registered nurse or medical practitioner against defined criteria.
The same criteria apply to every employee, whatever the occupation, income or background. There is no individual medical underwriting for eligible employees, and cover starts on day one.

The permanent loss of any one of three senses
Or the permanent loss of any two of seven physical abilities
